Understanding Database Systems

Prior to this chapter, you've used the Northwind Traders demonstration database, created a few simple databases, and perhaps imported your own data in another database format into an Access 97 table. No formal theories were presented to aid or hinder your understanding of the underlying design of the database examples. Now that you've gained some experience using Access, the more theoretical concepts of database design should be easier to understand.

This section takes a systems approach to database design, starting with a generalized set of objectives, outlining the steps necessary to accomplish the objectives, and then explaining the theory and practice behind each step.
