XML with SQL Server 2000

XML support is one of the new features of SQL Server 2000 (and Microsoft Data Engine [MSDE] 2000). The supported XML functions include the following:

  • The option to access SQL Server queries and procedures using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) with a uniform resource locator (URL). The system returns the results in XML.

  • The option to read and generate XML data with commands such as OPENXML.

  • Support of XML Data Reduced (XDR), a proprietary Microsoft XML schema standard environment (also known as XSD). W3C has recommended XML schema since May 2001.

  • Support for XSD with SQLXML 2.0 download.

  • The SQL Server 2000 object linking and embedding database (OLE DB) provider and ADO were expanded, so that the system can now process XML data.

  • With a SQL Server 2000 extension (available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/sql) you can use updategrams. Their purpose is the insertion, update, and deletion of tables using XML data in SQL Server.
