Part IV: Upsizing

Part IV: Upsizing

Many Access projects are initiated because existing Microsoft Access applications, due to the volume of data or the number of simultaneous network users, have reached capacity.

Access provides the Upsizing Wizard to convert Access mdb applications into Access projects. This wizard helps with the conversion, as it can transfer the data from an mdb database to a SQL Server/MSDE database. In upsizing, attempts are made to also transfer all queries, forms, reports, macros, and modules to an Access project. In most cases, manual work is required following upsizing because many Access mdb application structures cannot be transferred to Access projects.

All Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programs also have to be revised manually because only ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) is supported in Access projects, not Data Access Objects (DAO). Generally, converting programs from DAO to ADO is simple because many structures are similar, but sometimes the underlying logic also has to be revised.
