Part V: SQL Server/MSDE Administration > Data Backup Functions

Chapter 21. Data Backup Functions

Data backup functions for Microsoft SQL Server/MSDE databases differ from normal data backups in that the data for all database users is saved simultaneously and the database backup is usually performed during normal system operation. Most backup programs are not capable of backing up files that are open, so SQL Server and Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) must be closed during a backup. SQL Server and MSDE therefore have their own backup and restore components to allow these operations.

SQL Server and MSDE are designed so that power outages, hardware failure, and other problems have a minimal effect on the database. Every database operation is logged in the transaction log file. When an error occurs, the log file is used to restore the database to its condition before the error occurred.
