Part III: Programming with ADO >  Command Objects

Chapter 14. Command Objects

You can use Command objects to execute select queries, action queries, or data definition queries. If the select queries executed with Command objects report values, then these are transferred to a recordset. You can use Command objects to execute stored procedures with parameters and to request return values from stored procedure parameter values. Using parameters, it is also possible to simplify the composition of complicated WHERE clauses.

Command objects accelerate execution of requests because ADO requires the provider to compile the Command before executing it. If a query is carried out multiple times, but the values of parameters in the WHERE clause are different, then the server can access an existing run schedule from the second execution forward. This reduces the server load and therefore speeds up execution of the query.
