Chapter 24. External Data Sources > Linked Tables in Access 2002

Linked Tables in Access 2002

In Access 2002, the creation and linking of linked servers and ad-hoc links have all been simplified. Access 2002 provides the Link Table Wizard for creating table links (see Figure 24-7). This wizard can be started by selecting File, then Get External Data, and then Link Tables. The wizard does, however, have a significant restriction: Table links can only be created with the wizard if the Access project is linked to a local SQL Server and/or MSDE (that is, the database must run on the same computer as the project). This restriction is easy to explain because, as described earlier, OLE DB or ODBC information is used for linked servers or ad-hoc links. This information must be present on the computer running SQL Server/MSDE. For this reason, the wizard can only determine this information for a local SQL Server/MSDE server.
