Ad-Hoc Accesses

SQL Server also enables ad-hoc or pass-through accesses to external data sources. Two SQL commands are available for these purposes: OPENQUERY and OPENROWSET. In an ad-hoc query, a command is transferred and processed directly at the data source. This allows the transfer of not only SQL commands, but also specific commands for a data source.

Note

The ad-hoc or pass-through queries (OPENQUERY and OPENROWSET) function in a similar manner to pass-through queries in Access mdb databases.
