Interfaces

To program Access databases with Microsoft Visual Basic, a data access interface is required so that the data can be manipulated.

DAO and the Jet Engine

Conventional Access databases (mdb projects) use the Jet Engine to manage data. The Jet Engine, included in Access, is the database kernel through which all database operations are executed. Two versions of the Jet Engine ship in Access 2000 and Access 2002: Version 3.6 is in the “normal” version of Access, when the Data Access Objects (DAO) data access library is being used, and version 4 is used when gaining access with ActiveX Data Objects (ADO).
