Hour 14. Working with Relationships > Introducing the Relational Model

Introducing the Relational Model

In the activities at the end of Hour 13, you thought about how to add guests to the Parties database. What strategy did you pursue? A common approach is to add a repeating field (like the Menu field) to each record to use to store the guest names. That's fine, but what do you do if you need to store additional guest information such as phone numbers, dietary preferences, and the like?

One solution is to add that data to additional repeating fields in each event record, but that winds up storing a lot of duplicate data. Someone invited to five parties will have five entries containing phone number, dietary preference, and so forth. Not only does this waste space, but it also takes time to enter the duplicate data.
