Very Basic SQL

ODBC is designed to work with SQL, the standard for relational databases. All databases use SQL in one way or another. FileMaker does not use SQL internally for its own data storage, but it can import SQL data through ODBC, and (with FileMaker Server) it can export SQL data through ODBC. Before addressing the mechanics of ODBC, a brief description of SQL is provided because you need to know some terminology. This section introduces that terminology and provides a summary of the basic SQL data retrieval statement: the query statement.

Terminology in SQL and FileMaker

SQL uses some terminology that is different from FileMaker terminology. However, the basic database structures are much the same even though FileMaker implements them differently from SQL-based data management systems.
