Q&A

Q1:How much traffic can an Instant Web Publishing site handle?
A1: Traffic for any Web site is constrained by the bandwidth of the connection, the speed of the computer running the Web server software, and external constraints. In the case of FileMaker, the chief external constraint is that Instant Web Publishing using FileMaker Pro is limited to five connections. This makes it appropriate for workgroups as well as for Web-based solutions that have relatively few connections. This last situation is far from rare: Many people publish information on the Web that is, to say the least, recherché. There may be very few hits on such a site, but more often than not, the people using the site are finding out information that they could not find out anywhere else on the Web (or in the real world, for that matter).

If you need more than five connections, you need to use FileMaker Server, which is designed for larger-scale sharing over the Web.

Q2:Can you change the Instant Web Publishing status area?
A2: No. Any customization requires the XML process described in Hours 23 and 24. Instant Web Publishing is particularly powerful because it does so much automatically for you. But the cost is that you must accept its interface.
