Hour 2. Using FileMaker and Its Basic Te... > Working with FileMaker Windows

Working with FileMaker Windows

One important new feature in FileMaker 7 is the capability to open the same database in more than one window. With any window selected, choose Window, New Window from the menu to open a copy of it. After it is open, you can manipulate its data or layouts independently of the first one. This lets you see the same data in two different ways.

FileMaker keeps track of what is open where. If you are editing a field in one window, you can't start to edit that field in another window; you have to click out of the field in the first window before you can continue. To click out of a field, you can click in another one—but that simply repeats the problem. Clicking on the background or some other non-data-entry part of the window clicks you out of a field without clicking into another. If you do attempt to edit the same record from two windows, the error message shown in Figure 2.10 appears. Note that merely clicking in a field does not start the edit. As soon as you click in a field and press any key, you have started the edit and locked the record from other people.
