Part: IV Sharing FileMaker Solutions > Using FileMaker, XML, and XSLT

Hour 24. Using FileMaker, XML, and XSLT

What You'll Learn in This Hour:

  • Transforming XML Exports into HTML— You can take the XML files that you exported from the Hour 23, “Using FileMaker and XML with Other Applications,” and turn them into Web pages.

  • A Look at XSLT— This section looks at the details of XSLT, the tool that does the transformation.

  • Modifying the Simple Table Transformation— In this section, you see how to make several modifications to the simple table style sheet that ships with FileMaker.

  • Using XPath Expressions to Select and Manipulate Text— This section introduces you to more advanced programming for XSLT. It is only a taste of what is available, but it can start you thinking and doing new things.

In Hour 23, you saw how to export data using XML. This process is the most reliable way to export data that may contain delimiter characters (such as quotes or commas) as well as complex related data structures. The export process is totally data-related: No formatting is done. To read the data, you need to use am XML-savvy application or write code using XPath, XQuery, or another XML manipulation language.
