Part: IV Sharing FileMaker Solutions > Using FileMaker and XML with Other Appli...

Hour 23. Using FileMaker and XML with Other Applications

What You'll Learn in This Hour:

  • The XML Difference— XML allows you to handle the complexity of related data with ease. Because it uses tags to delimit data, it also avoids some of the issues that arise in comma- and tab-delimited files when delimiters are part of the data.

  • Setting Up the Example— Combine the Contact Management and Asset Management templates to track assets and the people to whom they are assigned. (This is also a good review of relationships.)

  • Exporting XML— Here is how to actually export the data that you have set up.

  • Inside an XML Document— This section examines the contents of XML documents in general.

  • The XML Export File from the Example— Your new set of databases now has a portal in the Contact Management database. This section shows you how you can export the data with XML.

  • What Next?— Tools such as XPath and XQuery can help you parse the exported data.

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is rapidly becoming the standard for data interchange. FileMaker supports XML import and export. In this hour, you will see how to use them. (Although this hour shows you how to export data from FileMaker and then import it back in, in most cases, you export from FileMaker and import into another application or vice versa).
