About FileMaker Networking

With FileMaker 7, the product lineup has been simplified. There are now four FileMaker products:

  • FileMaker Pro— The basic product, lets you create and use databases. Unless otherwise noted, everything discussed in this book with the exception of Hour 20, “Creating Solutions with FileMaker Developer,” applies to FileMaker Pro. With FileMaker Pro, you can share databases over a network (even over the Internet). Each person who accesses your shared database needs a copy of FileMaker Pro.

You also can use FileMaker Pro to publish databases using Instant Web Publishing. People can then use Internet browsers to access your shared database. FileMaker Pro allows only five users to share your database with Instant Web Publishing.

  • FileMaker Developer— The product lets you produce standalone FileMaker solutions. It also has a variety of tools that let you document and manage complex FileMaker solutions. FileMaker Developer incorporates FileMaker Pro; as a result, you can do everything you do in FileMaker Pro in FileMaker Developer—and more.

  • FileMaker Server and FileMaker Server Advanced— The workhorse application that you need to share databases among many people. It does not have the five-person limit for Instant Web Publishing that FileMaker Pro has; rather, its limit is 350. FileMaker Server is only a server product: You cannot design databases with it or use it as a client to access databases (shared or unshared).

  • FileMaker Mobile— Designed to run on portable digital assistants, some cell phones, and other small devices. It is designed to share data with a desktop FileMaker database.
