Q&A

Q1:What is the context of a calculation in FileMaker 7?
A1: Before FileMaker 7, only one table per file was allowed, and relationships were simple. Today, relationships can be complex, and, in fact, a single table may appear in several relationships within the same database. The context helps FileMaker keep things straight. Fortunately, for most cases, you don't have to worry about this: The default value is fine (and, in fact, for most simple databases, there is no possibility of using anything except the default value).
Q2:Can I rely on functions being updated as needed?
A2: FileMaker takes care of dependencies among functions and the fields that they reference. As a result, not only can you rely on their being updated, but you also need to be aware that those updates happen in the background. If your functions and calculations reference fields in databases located across a network, this can impact performance.
