Part: II Modifying Templates and Databases > Working with ODBC and JDBC

Hour 12. Working with ODBC and JDBC

What You'll Learn in This Hour:

  • What is ODBC?— First, you will find out what ODBC is all about.

  • Very Basic SQL— Next, there is an introduction to the SQL terminology that you need to know to deal with ODBC.

  • The FileMaker ODBC Example— The example that ships with FileMaker is used as the basis for the hands-on tutorial in this hour.

  • Setting Up a Data Source— You will see how to set up a data source on both Windows and Mac OS X.

  • Importing Data from a Data Source with FileMaker— The actual import of ODBC data is done from FileMaker. You will see how to do that.

In Hour 11, “Importing and Exporting Data,” you saw how to import and export data; you can use those techniques to share data between FileMaker databases as well as between FileMaker databases and other applications. This hour introduces you to a much more powerful technology that lets you share data with other database management systems (including the largest ones on mainframe computers).
