Hour 1. Introducing FileMaker > A Brief History of FileMaker

A Brief History of FileMaker

In 1984, the year the first Macintosh computer was sold, FileMaker emerged as one of the earliest applications on that platform. Like dBase, a database application on PCs, it was, indeed, a file maker: It let you easily create files with data in them. The data was not the continuous data you find in a word processing document; rather, it consisted of records, each one of which had identical fields such as name, address, or phone number.

FileMaker was an elegant and easy way to enter and retrieve this data; you could sort it at will, and you could create sophisticated reports for display onscreen or for printing on paper. Today, FileMaker can still do all that, and many people believe that it remains the most elegant and easiest way to manipulate data on a personal computer.
