Value Lists

As you have seen, databases contain tables, fields, and relationships. In one way or another all these are present in most data management systems. FileMaker also allows you to create value lists—lists of values either from fields or that you explicitly enter. These value lists can be used in validations (to check that an entered value is in the value list), in layouts (to populate pop-up menus, radio buttons, and the like), and to create custom sort orders (when you sort on a value list, the order of the items in the list is the order used to sort).

In this section, you'll see how to create two common types of value lists. Start by choosing File, Define Value Lists from the menu to open the Define Value Lists dialog, as shown in Figure 13.17.
