Part: V Appendices > Remove Calculations for Relationships

Remove Calculations for Relationships

Before FileMaker 7, relationships could only go to an adjacent table. Consider the case of three tables: A, B, and C. If A was related to B and B was related to C, it was not possible to access data in C from A. As a result, calculation fields proliferated. You could create a calculation field in B that contained the related value from C. Then, from A, you could access the adjacent field—the calculated value in B—and through it a value in C.

This was a common practice. It is no longer necessary in FileMaker 7. If the relationship graph shows a path from A to any other table (no matter how many intervening tables and relationship are involved), you can access the distant field from A.
