Creating and Working with Application Roles

An application role is a special type of role that allows an application to log in to SQL Server, regardless of the user who is running the application. An application such as Microsoft Access activates the role. SQL Server then grants users of the application whatever rights were given to the role. To create an application role:

1.
Expand the Database node until you can see the Roles subnode.

2.
Right-click the Roles subnode and select New Database Role. The Database Role Properties dialog box appears.

3.
Enter the name for the role.

4.
Click Application Role as the Database role type.

5.
Enter a password for the application role (see Figure 9.24).
