Chapter 20. Publishing Data on the Web > Testing ASP and HTX/IDC Files

Testing ASP and HTX/IDC Files

Because both the ASP format and the HTX/IDC file formats utilize server-side processing to output an HTML document, you must take the following steps to test the files on your Web server:

1.
Install the appropriate software on the computer that will act as the Web server (for example, the Microsoft Internet Information Server).

2.
Create a virtual directory under the root directory of the Web server (see Figure 20.14).

Figure 20.14. Create a virtual directory under the root directory of the Web server.

3.
Copy the ASP or HTX/IDC files to the folder. Make sure that you copy any related files, such as graphics or linked files.

4.
Define privileges for the folder. Make sure that you include Execute privileges for IIS 3.0 or Run Scripts privileges for IIS 4.0 and above (see Figure 20.15). The IIS Explorer appears as in Figure 20.16 when you are done.

5.
Define an ODBC data source that points to the database containing the data that you want to publish. Make sure that you define the data source as a System DSN on the Web server and that the data source name (DSN) matches the data source that you designated in the Microsoft Active Server Pages Output Options or HTX/IDC Output Options dialog boxes. Make sure that the username and password match the username and password entered in the User to Connect As and Password for User text boxes of the Microsoft Active Server Pages Output Options or HTX/IDC Output Options dialog boxes.

6.
Because the ASP and HTX/IDC file formats both utilize server-side processing, you must use the HTTP protocol when testing them. Notice that in Figure 20.17, the HTTP protocol is used to process the Products.asp file. The Web address used within the browser to process the IDC file is http://localhost/NorthwindAccess/Products.asp.
