What You’ll Create

We’ll start by defining the fields used in the database, specifying a field type for each one, as well as options (validation criteria and auto-entry values).

You’ll create this Data Entry layout and use it to record your trips.

You’ll create a Global Settings layout on which you’ll enter all the constants that are used in calculations, such as your odometer reading on January 1 and the amount allowed (per mile) by the IRS for business mileage. This layout also displays a running total for your business miles and their dollar value.

You’ll create a script-controlled report that you can view onscreen or print. To generate this year-to-date monthly summary, all you’ll have to do is click the Mileage Report button on the Data Entry layout.

Destination Report is a variation of the Mileage Report and is also generated by a script you’ll create. Instead of monthly totals, the Destination Report generates a separate total for each destination. To create the onscreen or printed version of this report, you’ll select a command from the Scripts menu.

The Blank Form layout is simply a form you’ll print to create a monthly trip log for your vehicle. You’ll use it to record the details of each trip and then transfer the data to the database when it’s convenient.
