Chapter 15. Web Publishing

Chapter 15. Web Publishing

In Chapter 13, we used FileMaker to access FileMaker databases over the Internet. Although useful, it's actually not the best and most flexible way to combine FileMaker and the Web. FileMaker lets you use a Web browser to access your databases, which means you can make your files available to anyone even if they don't own FileMaker themselves.

If you are not a crackerjack HTML or XML programmer and your needs are simple, the best way to get your databases on the Web is by using FileMaker's Instant Web Publishing. IWP is the ultimate in user-friendly. Just by enabling one plug-in and making a few menu choices, you can put actual files on the Web with almost no prior Web experience.

Although delightfully easy to set up, IWP has significant limitations. There are very few stylistic looks for displaying the data, and if you have to allow for older Web browser versions that don't support Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript and XML, the choices boil down to only one or two styles. If you want to incorporate FileMaker data into more complex Web pages or an already-existing Web site, you will need Custom Web Publishing instead of IWP. CWP allows you to display data, and to fully control your FileMaker database and the way it is visually and functionally presented. However, it relies on CDML (Claris Dynamic Markup Language), which is similar to HTML but considerably more complex, and requires that you already be familiar with HTML to use it effectively. In this chapter we cover the most important elements for using either method. Bear in mind, though, that explaining Custom Web Publishing alone could fill several books, so this chapter will only cover enough to get you started.

Chapter 19 explores the new Web publishing options in FM 5.5.
