Chapter 14. Using FileMaker Pro Server > Managing Server Remotely

Managing Server Remotely

You can configure FileMaker Pro Server so that you can change settings from another computer. There are many good reasons for not making your changes directly on the computer you're using as a server. The most important, however, is that the computer you've set up as the FileMaker Server may not be sitting right next to your desk. If you have to race around the building every time you want to tweak performance, you'll tend let things slide instead of fixing them. Remote administration makes it much more convenient to maintain and troubleshoot networked databases.

After installing the Remote Administration plug-in (found on your server installation CD) on any computers you want to use for Server administration, you can use FileMaker Pro to open and close files, send messages to connected users, disconnect users and see the usage statistics. In fact, the only things you won't be able to do remotely are those functions that relate to the Server computer itself, like setting preferences and quitting the Server software.
