Chapter 14. Using FileMaker Pro Server > Setting Up a Usage Log

Setting Up a Usage Log

You can have Server keep track of its activity and monitor usage by enabling the Usage Log option. Usage logs note any error situations that occur and keep track of server usage. When you're trying to optimize your server, this log can be invaluable. For example, the log shows the maximum number of users who have been connected to the server at one time, as well as the average number. Since Server runs most efficiently when the number of users allowed closely matches the number of actual users the database has to support, this figure can be a great help in increasing performance. The logs are text files that can be opened in any text or word processor software.

To set up a server usage log:

1.
Choose Edit > Preferences.

2.
When the Preferences dialog box appears. click the Logging tab.

3.
Click the Log Usage Statistics check box to create a log file (Figure 14.7).

Figure 14.7. You create a log of server activity using the Log Usage setting.

If you are running a network with a large number of users, you can set the size of the log to more than the default 1 MB.

4.
When you're done, click OK.

5.
Quit the Server application and restart it to enable your changes.
