Chapter 14. Using FileMaker Pro Server > Hosting Files on FileMaker Server

Hosting Files on FileMaker Server

When hosting files, keep them in one location in the server application folder, not scattered around the disk. Centralizing files makes them easier to back up or recover, and can improve access time among files with relationships. In addition, FileMaker Pro Server will automatically open any FileMaker databases that are either in the same folder as the Server application or in a folder inside the Server application folder. You can also use a shortcut (Windows) or alias (Macintosh) of the databases you want to open when Server starts.

To automatically host files in FileMaker Server:

1.
Open the FileMaker Pro Server application folder. Create a new folder. You can give it any name you choose (Figure 14.1).

Figure 14.1. Make a new folder for shortcuts/aliases of files you want to open automatically.

2.
Create shortcuts/aliases of the databases you want Server to automatically open. Copy those shortcuts/aliases into the new folder.

3.
Start FileMaker Pro Server.

The administration window will open with the Files tab active. In the list you will see a list of the files Server has automatically opened (Figure 14.2).
