Accessing Databases Over the Internet

You can open a FileMaker database hosted by another computer even if you aren't on the same network as long as both the host computer and the guest are connected to the Internet and the host computer has a fixed IP address. Both host and guest machines must have FileMaker set to use TCP/IP.

To open a FileMaker database over the Internet:

1.
Establish your Internet connection and start FileMaker.

2.
Choose File > Open.

3.
In the Open files dialog box, click Hosts.

4.
In the Hosts dialog box, click Specify Host (Figure 13.18).

Figure 13.18. When you click Hosts, you look for files outside your local computer.

5.
In the Specify Host dialog box, type the IP address of the computer hosting the database you want to open (Figure 13.19). Click OK.

When you return to the Hosts dialog box, you will see a list of all the open shared files on the host computer (Figure 13.20).

Figure 13.20. When FileMaker finds the computer, it will list the host's available databases.

6.
Double-click the file you want to open.

There will probably be a delay after you enter the IP address of the host and after you double-click the file to open (see the sidebar “Internet Speed and Internet Databases” on page 281).
