Chapter 18. Importing and Connecting > Importing with Scripts

Importing with Scripts

When you need to import data into a FileMaker database on a regular basis, it makes sense to use scripts. But FileMaker 5 had a small quirk that amounted to a major annoyance. When you set up a script to use the Matching Names drop-down option in the Import Field Mapping dialog box, the script would only remember the field order as it was set the first time. If the field order in the data source changed, the import script would not match the fields properly, even if all the names matched perfectly. Consequently, you had to set the script to display the Import Field Mapping dialog box for each import and then choose the Matching Names option again. FileMaker 5.5 has fixed this so you can now safely import data in a script without having to bring up the dialog box.

In this example, we'll do an import and then create a script to do that same import. With this script, as long as the field names remain the same, the data will import into the correct fields even if the field order in the source file changes.
