Chapter 18. Importing and Connecting

Chapter 18. Importing and Connecting

No good program is an island, and FileMaker 5.5 proves that with its increasing network of bridges. No area of database support has been ignored. Connections between your desktop and the rest of the world lead the list. At the small scale, FileMaker Mobile provides an easy to way to carry your database in your pocket. Transferring scripts from file to file, importing pieces of Excel worksheets instead of the whole file and reaching servers without muss and fuss are other small changes that show FileMaker's commitment to streamlining user tasks. ODBC support is the biggest change. Although not an SQL database itself, FileMaker Pro has worked hard to make the process of working with SQL databases smoother for all of us. Now you can create and store SQL queries, automating the ability to move data back and forth between FileMaker and the multitude of ODBC applications. In this chapter, we show you how to access and apply these new import and connection features.
