Chapter 12. Data Importing and Repairing > Troubleshooting Problem Data

Troubleshooting Problem Data

Some data problems can't be anticipated, so they find their way into your database even after you've taken basic precautions. These errors usually have to do with inconsistencies in data entry, misspellings and missing data. FileMaker's Replace command can be of immense help in correcting these problems. The Replace command allows you to set a field in every record in the database (or in a found set) to a particular value or the result of a calculation.

To show how Replace cleans up inconsistencies, we'll use the example of inconsistent entries in a database's State field. Some records might have no state name entered, while others might have entries like N.Y. or n.y. when you want NY.
