Chapter 7. Creating Simple Scripts > Storing Settings Before Scripting

Storing Settings Before Scripting

Looking at a list of steps you want to combine into a script, you'll probably notice that several steps depend on others. For example, if you want to print a report, you have to set up your printing options first. If you want to sort records, you have to find them first. The order in which you do things really does matter. This may seem pretty obvious when you look at it now, but it's actually easy to lose sight of this concept when you plan a script.

Settings like page size or sort order are easy to leave out, but you could get incorrect results if you've forgotten to consider them. Unless you tell it otherwise within the script steps, FileMaker will apply its most recently used settings, even if they're not appropriate for what you have in mind. Imagine how irritated you'd be to set a script in motion to print your 50-page accounts payable, only to find the data cut in two because the page setup specified portrait instead of landscape orientation.
