Chapter 6. Creating Relationships > Using Calculated Match Fields

Using Calculated Match Fields

A serial number match field assures that you won't create duplicate key values. However, it's much more useful for establishing a relationship between existing records than for new ones. In fact, it can be downright irritating if you try to use it for a new invoice. To create a new customer record, you have to know (or manually look up) the customer's serial number. Although you could look up serial numbers in the database, this is obviously not very efficient.

As an alternative, you can create a calculated match field that uses the data in the source file to uniquely identify which record is being chosen. The following example may need a little tweaking for your individual needs. If you have a very large database, for example, you may have to add the street address or phone number field to create a unique record for each customer.
