Chapter 6. Creating Relationships > Using a Portal for Navigation

Using a Portal for Navigation

By making a portal field into a button, you can quickly switch between records by just clicking the field.

To use a portal for navigation:

1.
Go to a layout with the self-relationship portal and switch to Layout Mode (Ctrl+L/Command-L).

In this example, we use the company portal we created in “To display and access self-relationship data” on page 111.

2.
Click one of the self-relationship portal fields. In this example, we use Full Name (Figure 6.56). Chose Format > Button.

Figure 6.56. Select a field in the portal to make into a button.

3.
In the Specify Button dialog box, scroll down to the Navigation section and select the type of location you want to connect your button to (Figure 6.57).

Figure 6.57. Select the button address type from the Navigation section. We choose Go to Related Record.

4.
In the Options section on the right, select the relationship in the Specify drop-down list (Figure 6.58). Click OK.

Figure 6.58. Connect the Full Name field to the related source file.

5.
Switch to Browse mode. Click on a Name field in the portal. You'll now see the record for the name you selected.
