Chapter 7. Converting Files > To convert files from earlier FileMaker versions:

To convert files from earlier FileMaker versions:

1.
While running FileMaker version 5.5, choose File > Open ( in Windows/ on the Mac) and navigate to the file created using an earlier version of FileMaker. Once you find it, click Open.

2.
A dialog box will appear, alerting you that the older original file will be converted and automatically renamed by adding Old to its name (Figure 7.1). (By default, the new FileMaker 5.5 version of the file will be given the original file's name.) Unless you want to type in another name, click OK. A new version of the data will appear in Browse mode.

Figure 7.1. A warning dialog box asks you to rename older FileMaker databases you convert to version 5.5.

Tip

  • Converting older version FileMaker files to version 5.5 is a one-way trip: Only FileMaker 5 and 5.5 will be able to read the converted file, which can be a problem if not all your co-workers have upgraded to at least version 5.
