Chapter 27. Enhancing Readability > Emphasizing Electronic Text

Emphasizing Electronic Text

Because of incompatibility problems among e-mail software packages, electronic writers have adopted common conventions for italicizing and underlining text. Use these electronic symbols judiciously, however, because confusion can result if your reader is unfamiliar with them.

To Italicize: Type an asterisk (*) on each side of the word or phrase to be italicized. For example, to italicize the word write, surround it with asterisks: The movie star didn’t actually *write* his autobiography; he told his story to a ghost-writer.
