Chapter 9. Grabbing the Reader’s Attention: The Lead

To maximize the impact of any written document, electronic or traditional, you must start strong. The lead—beginning with the first word of the first sentence and ending at the conclusion of the first paragraph—is the writer’s best, and sometimes only, opportunity to grab the reader’s attention.

A well-conceived lead draws readers in, motivating them to read the document through to its conclusion. If the lead is well written, your reader will grasp your meaning right away and decide immediately whether to continue reading, save your document for later review, or delete it.
