Listserv® Guidelines

Similarly, refer to your written e-mail policy before subscribing to a Listserv. Listservs are subscription-only e-mail lists that allow large numbers of participants to share information and discuss issues. If you belong to a professional association, for instance, you may sign up for that association’s Listserv.

Although Listservs are a quick and convenient way to share information and hold electronic discussions, they can create problems for the recipient and the recipient’s employer. A Listserv may have many, many subscribers. Every message and reply that is sent via the Listserv goes to every member. As a result, an employee who belongs to just one Listserv could receive many messages on any given day. Should that employee join several Listservs, the volume could increase to hundreds of e-mail messages a day. Multiply the time and resources spent by one Listserv subscriber by the total number of employees in your organization, and you could be facing a productivity nightmare.
