Understanding the Three Types of Business Plans

As we've seen in the introduction, business plans come in a variety of flavors. Business plans are as varied as businesses, and there isn't one business plan format or content that covers all occasions. Other types of business plans include strategic plans, investment plans, expansion plans, operational plans, annual plans, internal plans, growth plans, product plans, and feasibility plans, just to name a few.

The type of business plan you write depends on how you will use your plan and your specific situation. A plan's appearance, contents, and length depend upon the emphasis it places on the different parts of your business. For example, if your plan's purpose is to raise money, the management team becomes very important for investors, though your financial history is more important to bankers. If you're developing an internal business plan, you don't need to include a lot of background on your company that your intended audience already knows.
