About the Author

Richard P. Gabriel holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University and an MFA in Writing (Poetry) from Warren Wilson College. His research areas include programming languages, design techniques, development environments and methodologies, software patterns, and the nature of poetic beauty. He is the author of two prior books, Performance and Evaluation of Lisp Systems (MIT Press) and Patterns of Software: Tales from the Software Community (Oxford University Press). He has published more than a hundred scientific, technical, and semipopular papers, articles, and essays on computing, and numerous poems in literary magazines. His manuscript Leaf of My Puzzled Desire was a finalist for the National Poetry Series and won Honorable Mention in the Sawtooth Poetry Prize Competition. Throughout his twenty-five-year career in academia and industry he has endeavored to bring together art and science, artists and scientists. He lives in California.
