Chapter 10. Visual effectiveness > Use color and shading discreetly and appropr...

Use color and shading discreetly and appropriately

Color can be very helpful in establishing a hierarchy of importance, creating visual breaks, and clarifying information. Information that is to be presented online can usually include multiple colors with little impact to cost. In printed information, color can be expensive to use, so you might need to restrict its use. Even in black-and-white documents, though, shades of grey can be just as effective in adding clarity and interest to your information.

As with all graphic techniques, you should use color and shading to make the information easier to find, understand, and use. You must also ensure that the color or shading does not so overpower the information that it distracts or confuses the user.
