Chapter 7. Style > Write with the appropriate tone

Write with the appropriate tone

Tone conveys how a piece of writing “sounds” or how it feels to the user. Tone expresses the writer's attitude toward the subject and the audience. An appropriate and consistent tone helps the user do the task, learn the concepts, or make the right decisions without needing to interpret your rhetoric.

The tone of technical information must be helpful: writing concrete and accurate information establishes a helpful tone. The tone must be direct: writing clear information establishes a direct tone. The tone must also be authoritative: writing task-oriented, accurate, and complete information establishes an authoritative tone.
