Chapter 3. Accuracy > Use tools that automate checking for accuracy

Use tools that automate checking for accuracy

Although the style chapter addresses typographical and grammar errors, these problems can also affect the accuracy of the information. Many tools are available to help writers identify typographical errors and grammatical errors, and other types of errors such as invalid cross-references.

Typographical and grammatical errors can have a variety of effects. When users notice a minor error, their overall satisfaction with the information might decline slightly. If they notice many errors, they probably question the overall accuracy of the technical information. If the errors are in code examples, user procedures, statements of valid values, or syntax definitions, users are likely to stop reading the information or perhaps stop using the product. As Snyder and Spool mention in “Docs in the Real World,” errors in technical information can become “trust-breakers.”
