Section: 5 Words for Work

Section 5: Words for Work

In Section 5 you will learn to understand and use some words commonly used in several business areas. Lessons 26 through Lessons 35 will cover terms related to the following areas: employment, sales, marketing, accounting, finance, business computing, the Internet, leadership and group input, and shipping. These are terms that you will encounter on the job, reading work documents, in news and magazine articles, and even in your personal life. Even terms that are not directly related to your specific job are helpful— they help you understand the “big picture” of the business environment.

Important

The lessons in Section 5 present words in the context of a work-related paragraph—a portion of a memo, notice, advertisement, or other document. The key to learning and remembering the terms in these lessons is to try to determine their meaning from the way they are used in context. Review the strategies you learned in Section 1, “Clues from Context,” and use those strategies in these lessons.

Following each sample work-related document is a set of preview questions (“What Do You Know?”). Read the text containing the target words and then answer the questions. The answer to each question (“How Did You Do?”) contains an explanation of the answer and the target term. Be sure to read these explanations. The definitions of the target words and phrases are given in a box at the end of each section. Read the definitions and use them to review the lesson before completing the “Working with Words” section at the end of each lesson.
