Section: 3 Word Analysis

Section 3: Word Analysis

Many English words are composites, or combinations, of several parts. Prefixes are letter groups that appear at the beginning of a word, before the root or base of the word. The root of a word is the main part. It contains the main part of the meaning. A suffix is a letter or letter group attached to the end of a root. Like prefixes, suffixes give us more information about the word. Knowing the meanings of prefixes and suffixes, together with the meanings of word bases or roots, will be particularly useful in understanding and learning to use new words. In Section 3 you will learn to recognize many common prefixes, roots, and suffixes. You will learn their meanings and how they combine to form different words.

Lessons 11 through 14 focus on prefixes. You will learn to recognize and use words with prefixes related to size, negation, amount, number, time, place, relationships, and judgments. Lessons 15 through 17 will teach you some of the roots used in English words. These include roots related to seeing, communicating, doing, and describing. Lessons 18 and 19 help you learn about suffixes, particularly suffixes that add meaning related to describing, doing, and naming.

Write the meaning of each prefix, root, or suffix in the blank space provided. A word using each word part is provided as a hint. For more help, use a dictionary to check the meaning of the example word.
