Principal, Principle

The root of these words, princ-, means “first” or “basic.” One of these words refers to a rule or law. The other means someone or something that is first in rank; this term can also mean an amount of money that is owed or that is earning interest. Read the following examples and then answer the preview questions.

  • That theory is based on principles of physics.

  • He is said to be a man of very high principles.

  • How much is the principal of your loan?

  • The principal reason that Wallace changed jobs was the opportunity for advancement in the new company.
