Precede, Proceed

Pay very close attention to the prefixes of these terms. One term means “go before” and the other means “go forward.” Read the following examples and then answer the preview questions.

  • When listed in alphabetical order, Tonia precedes Ursula.

  • The ten o'clock news precedes the late-night movie.

  • Please proceed with your presentation immediately after the break.

  • Will the firm proceed to produce the new item after the strike?
