Accept, Except

Although these two terms sound very much alike and, indeed, have the same root, they are very different in meaning: One combines the root meaning “to take” with the prefix meaning “in”; the other combines the root with the prefix meaning “out.” Read the following examples and then answer the preview questions.

  • The committee asked Jennifer to accept the award for creativity.

  • Management accepted the report as accurate.

  • Everyone was present except Henry.

  • Send Dan all of the files except the customer file.
