-port-, -fer-

The Latin verb portare, meaning “to carry,” gives us the root found in portable, porter, deport, report, transport, import, and export, among others.

Another Latin verb that means “to carry” or “to bring” is ferre. The -fer- root from this verb is found in ferry, transfer, refer, and others. An interesting noun that uses this root is conifer, a cone-bearing tree.
