Chapter 1. Commonsense Questions

Often you can understand the general meaning of a word by applying your common sense and background knowledge. Using your experience and existing knowledge to guess about an unfamiliar word—or a familiar word used in an unfamiliar way—is often enough for you to understand the idea, instruction, or information you are reading. You will be able to satisfy your purpose for reading. This approach allows you to keep on reading, and your understanding of the term may well improve as you continue to read.
